- The Opportunity
This is an opportunity for an experience AV/IT Technician to provide support for the audio-visual and related computing equipment located in the our client's central pool of teaching space and within Colleges and corporate services locations, under the direction of the Technical Team Manager.
You will take the lead in individual AV/IT installation projects, and will provide high-level technical expertise in sound, control system programming, event capture and room installation design. Other duties will include providing technical guidance to team members on lower grades, thorough diagnosis and resolution of equipment faults and acting as team work controller on a rota basis.
The post will be located in one or more locations across the University. The post will either involve working a shift pattern which covers an extended working day and week, or will be allocated to a recurring work pattern.
Key duties & responsibilities:
To undertake fault diagnosis, repair and configuration of equipment, including computers, large format screens, controllers, scalers, monitors, data projectors and related equipment. Responding to helpline calls as directed.
To configure and repair audio-visual and associated computing equipment. This includes lecture theatre installations, touchscreen control systems, interactive display products, large screens, event capture cameras, digital signage appliances and servers and video-editing suites and other specific installations.
To design and install new audio-visual and computing installations in seminar rooms, lecture theatres and offices and as contracted by other parts of the University and external commercial customers, to the highest professional standards
To provide coaching, mentoring , support and advice on technology and systems to AV/IT Support Assistants on an individual or group basis
To use specialist knowledge in one or more of these areas , to be agreed with the technical team manager:
Live sound production in a variety venues
Desktop image creation ,deployment, recovery and maintenance
Digital Signage
Control system programming and fault diagnosis
Room equipment design
Lecture Capture
Video Conferencing
Windows and SQL server administration and setup
To design, deploy and maintain new desktop images on installed computers in lecterns and other installations with software applications installed to meet academic and student
needs, providing resilience and recovery options in the case of system failure
To design and install new audio-visual and computing installations in seminar rooms and as contracted by other parts of the University, to the highest professional standards
To design and install sound systems, including the use of IP protocols such as Dante
To maintain and program AV control software systems, including products mostly from Extron, but also AMX Procon and Crestron .
To use management information , stock control, booking, inventory and workflow systems (currently ServiceNow) to ensure the efficient running of the service.
To provide support throughout events such as inaugural lectures and conferences.
To develop skills through participation in technical and other training courses
To undertake such other duties as may be required from time to time to further the work of the division.
Based in Edgbaston, Birmingham salary will be £22k to £27.7k p.a.plus 5 weeks holiday p.a. (plus Easter, Christmas New Year) pension etc.,
Your skills and experience
The successful candidate will have:
▪A minimum of 5 GCSEs or equivalent is essential, preferably including Mathematics and English, all at Grade C or above
▪Full clean driving licence.
▪Infocomm CTS is desirable though not essential
▪A history of working in a service industry or similar environment.
▪Detailed technical knowledge of Audio-Visual equipment including digital projection, control systems, sound systems and installation work.
▪To be able to install, configure and bulk deploy a fully featured desktop such as Windows 10 with Office, Firefox and academic applications.
▪Experience of configuring and maintaining PCs in a distributed environment, using a local area network.
▪Active engagement with users of teaching technologies to maximise the benefit and uptake of those technologies
▪Live sound production

▪Good DIY skills including measuring, cutting, drilling, fixing and finishing.

You will be required to wear team-wear on a daily basis to undertake all duties.
The role involves rota working over an extended day and week, including one Saturday in every three (counted over an entire year). Currently the working day the team covers is from 07.45 18.30 Monday to Friday and 08.30 14.30 on Saturdays.
You may be required to work overtime with reasonable advance notice being given. This is typically for events such as conferences, open days and degree congregations.
