Jenny Holzer was keen to explore how artists can use digital to bring art closer to the observer while at the same time, offering a different perspective to the SOFTER exhibition. Holition was invited to develop an artistic augmented reality app which would create a deeper relationship between visitors to the exhibition as well as offering a sense of awe and excitement around Holzer’s pieces.
Small beacons placed in and around the grounds of Blenheim Palace send signals to the app which trigger surprising projections. Projected onto the historic façade of the palace and grounds nearby, Holzer’s text-based light works will be shown during free evening events for 12 nights.
Whatever time of the day visitors will be able to use the app to activate a 360-degree panoramic view of the night-time projections in real-time. The app will be available throughout the exhibition. Visitors can also co-create their own version of Holzer’s iconic art as the app makes it possible to overlay her scrolling text onto a live camera feed and to save the image to the device.
