Immersive installations and celebrations for Panasonic’s 100th anniversary

With this year marking Panasonic’s centenary the company celebrated in style with an immersive installation in the courtyard of the Palazzo di Brera museum in Milan. The multi-sensory experience, Air Inventions,

explored the subject of air quality and formed part of Milan Design Week and combined a selection of Panasonic’s proprietary technologies, from audio visual products through to air-conditioning innovations.

Taking place within a 20-metre wide, water drop-shaped pavilion, the experience relied on Panasonic’s PT-RQ32K 27,000 lumen super-brightness laser projectors to display 4K images on the interior surface of the dome. The ultra-brightness projector was teamed up with Panasonic’s high-resolution fisheye lens, which expands the projected angle of view. Using the products in unison is particularly suitable for dome projections such as Air Inventions, but it also helps reduce the number of units needed when staging events in large spaces of all shapes.

In addition to the amalgamation of images, sound and light, the experience was made more atmospheric thanks to Panasonic’s air-conditioning creations. While the company’s proprietary technology ‘nanoe x’, collected moisture from the air and applied a high voltage to create nano-sized particles of water, Panasonic’s ‘silky fine mist’ technology used compressed air to turn water into minute particles that were so fine visitors remained dry whilst inside the dome. The mist also doubled up as a screen for the projection, marking a new form of illumination as light was cast onto it.

Panasonic has showcased their products and installations at Milan Design Week since 2006. This year, the company chose to base their creations around the theme of ‘Transitions’ to reflect the design team’s ambition to be flexible, adaptable and respond to changes. The special collaboration between the museum and Panasonic included a series of talks focusing on culture, living space and community and highlighting the company’s technological and design achievements.

Speaking at the press conference on the day of the grand reveal of ‘Air Inventions’, Laurent Abadie, ceo and chairman Panasonic Europe, said: “Today, Panasonic has approximately 257,000 employees worldwide. This year marks our 100th anniversary and while times have changed, our values have not. However, in our rapidly changing times it’s important that Panasonic continues to provide new solutions for society. One of our efforts will be to strengthen our design approach to continue to innovate now and in the future.

In keeping with the theme of transitions, Shigeo Usui from Panasonic Design Kyoto, added: “In order for Panasonic Design to revolutionise, we needed a change. We will start by centralising our creative activities in Kyoto by establishing Panasonic Design Kyoto. We chose Kyoto because it is rich in authentic Japanese values that we feel are important for us to connect to in our age of diversity.”
